When did we forget to be a decent human being?

Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see

Did you know for one easy payment of zero dollars and zero cents you can turn someone’s day around without even realizing it. What's even more amazing is that kindness can be understood in any language without the need of a translator. Too often we are so busy with our heads buried on our phones, that we forget to make eye contact with others as we walk.

A simple smile has the potential to turn someone’s day around, bring reassurance or sense of peace, or simply feel noticed. A thinking of you message can make anyone struggling feel a sense of support. A small act of kindness can help someone feel hopeful. A lending ear can make someone feel heard and allow them to release what they are holding tightly inside.

Most battles are fought in silence

We all fight silent battles that we don’t always discuss, and we may never know what goes on in someone else’s life. Social media filters have unfortunately transitioned into the real world where people hide their struggles, and you wouldn't even know it.

For me, I view life in a different perspective, and it has a lot to do with my work environment. I work in the medical field, but while I am not clinical, I am in the least favorite department of any hospital, the cancer center. Patients may walk in and back out with their worlds crumbling because they just received the most heart-breaking news. The news could have been about themselves, a family member, or a friend they may have gone to an appointment with. Regardless of who the news was for, it has potential to turns someone’s life upside down. Working in this environment has taught me that your life can change in a split second, and we often waste our time looking at the negative instead of appreciating the positive.

Time to reprogram our brains

Sadly, our brains seem to be programed to gravitate towards the bad over the good. We invest our time focusing on what is outside of our control. If you can't change it, change your attitude towards the situation. Always keep in mind, when you change the way you look at things, I promise the things you look at will start to change.

When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change

So for once, let’s be kind. Let’s go back to wishing someone a good morning, a thank you, a kind word. To say I walk around in rainbows and glitter will be far from the truth. Well, maybe you will find me with specs of glitter, but I'll save that story for my crafting post. What I am is, a true believer that we rise by lifting others. We have the advantage that there isn't a rule book to follow on how to be a decent human being; we simply can do it on our own. It's ok to disagree, as long as we do it respectfully. It's ok to have different believes, after all diversity is a beautiful part of life. Be the reason someone believes in the goodness of people.
